Job Description

Assumes a primary role at her/his respective campus in providing an active, effective hospital-wide Infection Prevention Program that consists of surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare associated infections under the direction of the System Director of Epidemiology/Infection Prevention. Responsible for participating in Infection Prevention activities in collaboration with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Supports the organization vision and mission. Uses knowledge of patients age and cultural diversity in the provision of patient care. Works independently to analyze surveillance findings and trends and researches evidence-based interventional strategies to address areas needing improvement. Develops and presents educational programs designed to change caregiver practices based on surveillance findings and evidence-based protocols. Independently takes off-hours call for LMHS concerning Epidemiology/Infection Prevention. Serves on selected hospital and/or System committees or task forces in order to provide effective infection prevention-related input for policy and procedure development or practice improvement. Provides input into the annual Infection Prevention Plan and assists in developing departmental priorities.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or B.S or M.S in a related health care field such as Microbiology, Medical Technology, Epidemiology/Public Health, etc. preferred. Candidates with current progress towards bachelors degree in a related health care field at time of hire/promotion may be considered with current Certification in Infection Control (CIC). Candidate is expected to complete the bachelors degree within 2 years of hire/promotion into position. Experience: Has a minimum of two (2) years previous experience in staff nursing or two (2) years previous experience in medical professional field appropriate to their education and proven capability for supervisory responsibilities. The IP must be knowledgeable in patient care practices and/or adult education principles. Has the ability to work with persons of varying education and cultural backgrounds. Training: Will attend a recognized training course (CDC/APIC) in Infection Prevention/Hospital Epidemiology or alternatively, must have and maintain current Certification in Infection Control (CIC). IP will attend State, Regional or National Infection Prevention conferences as System resources permit. The IP will obtain Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within 2-3 years of hire into the position. License: Holds current RN licensure by the Florida State Board of Nursing, or professional license or certification as appropriate for their education. Other: Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills, excellent customer service skills, and basic computer skills.
